Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love in any form. Whether romantic or platonic, we use this special day in the middle of winter to warm our hearts by declaring our love for the people in our lives. In elementary schools everywhere, children celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving each other cards. Big, small, decorated with stickers, or filled with candy, these cards are the children’s first foray into articulating their respect and appreciation for each other and it is an important part of the Valentine’s Day tradition. In order to give and receive these cards, the children often create their own Valentine box in which they collect their cards. And, as is often the case, these boxes are constructed at home and then brought to school for the festivities. For those craft-challenged parents faced with the prospect of helping their child with such a project, there are several easy Valentine box ideas that will have your child ready for Valentine’s Day in no time.

First and foremost, the shoebox is your best friend when it comes to simple Valentine box ideas. All you need to do is take an ordinary shoebox and cover it with brown paper – turn a grocery shopping bag inside out and you have all the brown paper you need. Or, if you have any on hand, you can cover the box with Valentine’s Day wrapping paper –anything, white, red, or pink will do. Once the box is covered, cut a slit in the top of the box lid so that cards can be slipped inside the box. Then let your child go to town decorating the box with stickers, drawings, fabric, glitter, beads, paint – all of which you can pick up at your local craft store. Just make sure that their name is on the box somewhere.

Another one of the equally popular Valentine box ideas is to take an empty Valentine’s Day candy box – heart shaped or otherwise – and cut a slit in the top into which you can slip cards. Again, cover the box so that your child can decorate it the way that they want to and be sure they put their name on the box somewhere.

The most important part of any Valentine box ideas, of course, is that your child has fun doing it. Make it a craft that the two of you can do together by gathering all the materials and shopping for what you need. Then you can both sit down and plan the design of their special Valentine box.

The longer I've been here, the more creative I've become. The creative juices have just been flowing and I have become quite the crafty gal. With Valentine's day coming up and more and more bills to pay it means I have to create something for Valentine's day this year. Here is a great craft idea for you and your Valentine sweetie.

A love box- This is my favorite craft idea of all time. It actually came to me from my officiant, but I'm going to change it up a little bit so you can get crafty with it. This makes for a great Valentine gift that you can actually make with your significant other. There is great meaning behind it, which I will get to later. What you can use is:

* A box with a lid- big enough to put a bottle and glasses in
* Construction paper
* Stickers
* Glue
* Glitter
* Scissors
* String or tape

All you need to do is create the box in any fashion you wish. You can cut the construction paper to wrap around your box and then glue it on. You can decorate with all different embellishments including stickers and glitter. You can write your names on the outside of the box or write "I love you because..."

Once the box is complete you can then put in a bottle of wine, champagne or whatever the two of you like to drink and two wine glasses. You then need to go in your separate corners and write a note to each other. In this note, you need to write why you love each other, what makes you happy about that person and why you want to marry this person, or why you already married this person. Do NOT show each other the notes you wrote. Once they are done, you put them in the box with the bottle and glasses. You can then tie a string around this box or tape it shut and put it away in storage. You CANNOT read the notes you wrote for each other. What's the point you ask?

The point is this: If there is ever a time in your relationship when it gets really tough and one of you thinks about giving up then you need to get this box out of storage. The two of you need to take the box out together and open it. You then open your bottle and pour it in the glasses while you read what each other wrote about the other person. In doing so, you will remember all the good times and why you love this person as well as why they love you. You will become a stronger person as an individual and as a couple. I just love this so much and it has so much meaning to it. This doesn't necessarily have to be a Valentine's craft, but it can be for any day.

If there's never a rough patch in your relationship then congratulations! Set a high goal for yourselves. If you reach 10 years of happiness then write another note to each other and add it to the box. Hopefully you won't ever have to read them.

Valentine’s Day is just a few short weeks away. Get in the spirit by making some fun Valentine’s crafts with your kids. Use them to decorate the house, or make little cards that your child can exchange with friends and family. This is also a great time to talk about the people that are important to your child like grandparents and friends at school. Teach your child the importance of showing these people how much she likes them. Make a special card for each of them together, then mail them or hand-deliver the cards together.

Heart-Shaped Cards

Fold a piece of construction paper in half and trace a large heart on it. Draw the heart so one side touches on the folded side of the construction paper. Cut the heart out, being careful to keep the folded area intact. This makes a foldout heart-shaped card. Let your child decorate the card with markers, stickers, glitter and cutouts from magazines. When she is done, help her write a note for the recipient of the card inside. Stick the card in an envelope and it is ready to be mailed or handed out.

Valentine Collage

Start with a large sheet of paper or construction paper. Grab some old magazines and the advertisements out of this week’s paper. Look for anything Valentine’s Day related, such as hearts, flowers, and candies. Have your child create a Valentine Collage with these magazine cutouts, then use markers, crayons and stickers to further decorate it. Hang the finished collage up – it makes a great Valentine’s Day decoration.

Heart Garland or Banner

If you’d like to decorate even more for Valentine’s Day, make a heart banner or garland. Cut heart shapes out of red and pink construction paper or craft foam. Use a hole-punch to make a hole in each side of the heart. Then use pink ribbon to tie all the heart together into a garland.

If you’d like to personalize this banner, take a marker or pen and help your child write the names of the people she loves in each of the hearts. This also makes a cute classroom craft with each child writing their own name on one of the hearts.
